Airports play a crucial role in enhancing the economic growth of a city/state. It therefore augurs well for a region when airport infrastructure is strong and passengers throng airports.

As per the Vision 2040 report released by the civil aviation ministry earlier this year it stated that India’s air passenger traffic is expected to grow six fold to 1.1 billion per year by 2040.

In fact for the month of February India for the 54th consecutive month registered double digit growth in domestic air passenger numbers as per global airlines body IATA.

With these astounding  projections  and figures we at Vizag Industrial Scan took stock of the air passenger numbers in the sun rise state of Andhra Pradesh and found that the airports with the fastest growth no’s were Vijayawada and Tirupathi.

The state of AP has about 5 airports with the major ones comprising of Vizag, Vijayawada and Tirupathi.

These three major airports in the state have done significantly well in the last fiscal with Vijayawada and Tirupathi registering a staggering growth of 58% and 44% respectively. In fact the Vijayawada airport achieved a landmark milestone of having crossed the 1 million passengers mark last fiscal.

‘Pro-active measures by the state government such as reducing VAT on ATF to 1% thereby encouraging airlines to refuel in the state, introducing additional flights in the cities of Vijayawada and Vizag airport have been some of the reasons for this impressive growth in numbers’ said Mr Ajay Jain, IAS Principal Secretary, Energy, Infrastructure & Investment& CRDA Dept, Govt of AP.

In terms of aircraft movement too Vijayawada saw an increase from 13487 flights in fiscal 2017-18 to 21169 in the last fiscal. Similarly Tirupathi airport saw an increase in its aircraft movement from 7814 flights in fiscal 2017-18 to 11404 flights in the last fiscal.

‘Investors and Tourism have also led to this surge in passenger growth’ stated Mr Jain.

Though the growth at Vizag airport was significantly lesser compared to its counterparts Vijayawada and Tirupathi it still ranks  as the highest in terms of passengers handled in the state. With total passengers handled at 2851919 for the last fiscal Vizag airport recorded a growth of 15% compared to the previous fiscal.

International Passengers

Albeit Vizag has been an international airport for quite some time now, the state’s capital Vijayawada recently initiated an international flight too.

Vijayawada airport recently got connected to Singapore on Dec 4th 2018 and has already handled 6254 passengers as of March 31st 2019.

In regards to international passengers the Vizag airport witnessed a growth of about 12%. International passengers handled at Vizag airport stood at 150328 compared to 134343 in 2017-18.
