Indian universities have the potential to be leading institutions in the world if we ensure academic freedom, observed by former President of India, Bharat Ratna Awardee Mr Pranab Mukherjee at GITAM Deemed to be University. He participated as Chief Guest in GITAM 39th Foundation Day Celebrations to receive GITAM Foundation Award.
While delivering GITAM endowment lecture he said that Indian institutions must pursue excellence in every sphere of academic activity, be it teaching, evaluation, research or project work and urgent improvements in academic management. He mentioned that our future growth will result not so much from the utilization of our resources with existing technology than from its better usage through more advanced technology
He lamented that investment in research in our country is lacking. He said that Research and innovation are the keystones for widening the country’s production potential. He mentioned that the R&D expenditure as percentage of GDP is a mere 0.8 percent in India and it is very low when compared with Japan, US and China. He said that our innovations have to address many social challenges by adopting innovative problem-solving approaches which requires a new mind-set of interdisciplinary and multidisciplinary education.
GITAM President Mr M. Sribharath presented the GITAM Foundation Award to Mr Pranab Mukherjee as part of GITAM 39th Foundation Day celebrations.
