The Rs 21,000 crore Visakh refinery modernization project of HPCL is all set to be commissioned in this calendar year.
The brownfield expansion of the Vizag refinery has been going on since the past few years wherein the scope of work involved has been mammoth.
‘You shall see that in September 2020 the Visakh refinery modernization will be commissioned’ said HPCL’s CMD Mr MK Surana speaking exclusively to Vizag Industrial Scan.
Post the modernization of the Visakh refinery its capacity is set to almost double from 8.33 MMT to 15 MMT.
Elaborating further on the modernization of the Visakh refinery Mr Surana informed that the modernization has different parts to it such as enhancing the capacity from 8.33 MMT to 15 MMT, getting ready for BS VI norms, Bottom up gradation.
‘We have already started production of BS VI fuels’ said the oil marketing major’s CMD.
It is said that HPCL sells around 38 MMT (Million Metric Tonnes) of petroleum products.
‘Out of this we produce 18 MMT in our own refineries and 11 MMT in JV refinery so we are short from what we sell. It is therefore we are expanding both of our refineries’ stated HPCL’s CMD.
Apart from the Vizag refinery HPCL has a refinery in Mumbai which has a current capacity of 7.5 MMT which is being expanded to 9.5 MMT.
While HPCL’s joint venture refineries consist of HRRL (HPCL Rajasthan refinery Ltd.) a joint venture between HPCL and government of Rajasthan with a capacity of 9 MMT.
HPCL’s other joint venture is HMEL i.e. HPCL and Mittal Energy limited in the state of Punjab. This facility will has a capacity of 11.3MMT.

HPCL recently announced its Q3 results for this fiscal wherein its net profit trebled from Rs 248 crores to Rs 747 crores during the same period last year.
