The Indian Institute of Petroleum and Energy (IIPE), Visakhapatnam today conducted its 6th Annual Convocation.
This convocation was special of sorts as it was conducted for the first time at the Institute’s permanent campus located at Vangali, Anakapalli District.
Addressing the gathering as chief guest Dr. V.K. Saraswat, Member, NITI Aayog, Government of India highlighted the critical role of energy security, sustainability, and technological self-reliance in shaping India’s future.
He emphasized that India’s transition towards clean energy, green hydrogen, renewable energy systems, energy storage technologies, and advanced manufacturing would require highly skilled professionals and innovative research ecosystems.
Dr Saraswat urged the graduates to contribute towards nation building through integrity, leadership, innovation, and lifelong learning.
Stressing the importance of climate responsibility and technological sovereignty, he called upon the students to become architects of India’s energy future and contribute meaningfully to the vision of Viksit Bharat.
Number of Degrees
A total of 114 students received degrees during the convocation, including 97 B.Tech. students (46 in Petroleum Engineering and 51 in Chemical Engineering), 15 M.Sc. students in Applied Geology, and 2 Ph.D. scholars.
Giving his address President, Board of Governors, IIPE, Prof. P.K. Banik, underscored the importance of strengthening India’s energy security through research, innovation, and indigenous technological development.
He noted that IIPE is playing an important role in emerging areas such as Artificial Intelligence applications in the energy sector, renewable energy systems, hydrogen technologies, and geophysical exploration for natural hydrogen resources.
Prof Banik also highlighted the growing collaboration between academia, industry, and policymakers in addressing the nation’s future energy challenges.
IIPE’s director, Prof. Shalivahan highlighted several major achievements of the institute, including the commencement of hydrogen generation under the NTPC-supported project using desalinated water, international collaborations with reputed global institutions, establishment of advanced research facilities with support from industry partners, and increasing focus on sustainability-driven research.
The Director further stated that IIPE is actively contributing towards national priorities in energy transition, wastewater treatment technologies, decarbonization of industries, and future hydrogen ecosystems.
Medals Awarded
Mr. Ansul Chatterjee was awarded the prestigious President’s Gold Medal for academic excellence and all-round merit.
Similarly, Gold and Silver Medals for academic excellence were awarded for B.Tech. Chemical Engineering to Mr. Amitansu Das (Gold) and Mr. Anupam Anand (Silver)
For B.Tech Petroleum Engineering gold medal was given to Mr. Harsh Kumar Abhijit and Mr. Soham Mukherjee (Silver)
And for M.Sc. Applied Geology – Mr. Amardeep Prasad got Gold while Ms. Debadrita Sengupta received Silver.
Special awards were also presented to Ms. Ishita Mandal as the Outstanding Girl Student in UG Programme and Ms. Tamanna Islam as the Outstanding Girl Student in PG Programme.
Mr Ram Phal Dwivedi, Registrar, members of the Board of Governors and Senate, faculty, staff, students, parents, along with other distinguished guests participated.
