Fast-Tracking India’s Heavy Freight

Published on

For decades, India’s express logistics has been a “small parcel” game. While a 1kg courier arrives in 24 hours, heavier shipments like mattresses or automotive spare parts often get delayed in transit for over a week.

Mr Dinesh Reddy, CEO of ONDL, recognized that the problem wasn’t a lack of capacity but a lack of digital orchestration. Coming from a manufacturing background, Dinesh and his co-founder, Mr R. Krishna Chaitanya, identified a systemic gap: the traditional “Hub-and-Spoke” model was undermining efficiency.

Aggregation at hubs is where time is lost. This MeitY-NASSCOM incubated ONDL’s solution is a “Hubless” model that utilizes existing under-tapped capacities like railway parcel vans, bus cargo, and regional trucks to move heavy freight directly.

This shift was validated through a pilot with the APSRTC bus network, proving that the infrastructure for speed already existed—it just lacked a digital gateway.

The startup’s secret sauce is its “Intelligence Layer.” By providing an Agent/Broker App and an Open Source Cargo Management System, ONDL has digitized the regional players who handle 90% of India’s logistics but lack enterprise access.

This allows brands like Wakefit, Duroflex, and Ola Electric to achieve “Next-Day” delivery in Tier 2 and Tier 3 cities—cutting a typical seven-day turnaround time down to just 48 hours.

To sustain this ecosystem, ONDL operates on a dual-revenue model. They charge enterprises an orchestration and fulfilment fee for managing the complex distribution layer. Simultaneously, regional operators pay a SaaS subscription to use ONDL’s unified tool, which allows them to manage both ONDL’s orders and their own independent local customers.

With a methodical culture and $250K in angel funding, ONDL is now moving beyond its South Indian stronghold into Gujarat, Maharashtra, and Delhi. As they eye a $1M growth round, ONDL is building the digital backbone for a faster Bharat, proving that even the heaviest loads can achieve global standards of speed.
