Marking a significant milestone of IIT Tirupati’s growing partnerships with industry, Lincoln Electric India and the Indian Institute of Technology Tirupati (IIT Tirupati) inaugurated the Welding Research Centre at the institute’s campus.
The Centre is said to be the outcome of a collaboration between IIT Tirupati and Lincoln Electric India, bringing together the strengths of academia and industry to foster collaborative research, technology development, training, and skill development in welding and related technologies.
The inauguration was a significant occasion, with Mr. Sivapathasundaram Kaja, Managing Director, Lincoln Electric India, and Prof. K.N. Satyanarayana, Director, IIT Tirupati, jointly unveiling the ‘Welding Research Centre’ identity, symbolizing the spirit of collaboration that defines this partnership.
Mandate of the Centre
The Welding Research Centre is envisioned as an interdisciplinary, institute level hub for collaborative research, training, and skill development in welding and related technologies.
The Centre will bring together IIT Tirupati’s academic and research capabilities with Lincoln Electric India’s industry expertise, while providing a platform for faculty members, researchers, students, and industry partners to work together on emerging challenges and opportunities in welding and allied areas.
As part of the inaugural programme, a Presentation and Discussion Session were also held, bringing together the leadership of Lincoln Electric India and representatives from Tata Steel Limited, Wipro Infrastructure Engineering, Wipro Hydraulics, L&T Precision Engineering and Systems, Frontline Techsol Pvt. Ltd., Nextgen Plasma Pvt. Ltd., and the Indian Institute of Welding (IIW).
The participating industry leaders shared their perspectives on emerging welding technology requirements, workforce and skill gaps, and potential areas for collaboration with the Centre.

The Centre will provide a platform for students, researchers and industry to work together in developing and deploying cutting edge technologies in welding and related areas” said IIT Tirupati’s director Prof Satyanarayana.
Similarly, Mr. Sivapathasundaram Kaja, Managing Director, Lincoln Electric India, said “Our vision is to create a bridge between scientific discovery and industrial application, while developing the next generation of manufacturing researchers and engineers.”
