The Vizag International Cruise Terminal is slowly but surely carving a niche for itself on India’s cruise tourism map. With rising passenger footfalls and positive feedback from multiple stakeholders, the recent data paints an optimistic picture for the future of sea-bound travel from the city.
As per Visakhapatnam Port Authority (VPA) sources Cordelia Cruises’ operations have garnered positive feedback from passengers and crew alike.
This coupled with State-of-the-art terminal facilities, improved infrastructure at VPA and an overall growing interest in leisure travel has resulted in an uptick in cruise traffic from Vizag Port.
The cruise season on the East Coast typically spans the monsoon months—June, July, and August—when weather conditions are more favorable for this coastline. The city has shown steady interest in cruise tourism, particularly among families and first-time cruisers from the region.
Cordelia cruise was the first to start operations here in FY 23 wherein VPA handled 15 voyages of MV Empress operated by Cordelia Cruises. That season witnessed an impressive occupancy rate of 95.39%.
A total of 17,910 passengers disembarked, while 12,140 passengers embarked during this period. Passengers this fiscal too seem to have welcomed Cordelia cruises with great enthusiasm. With cruises having begun in July 2025, VPA has independently handled three Cordelia voyages (Vizag to Chennai via Puducherry) this year, clocking a combined footfall of 7,591 passengers.
The occupancy for MV Empress operated by Cordelia Cruises stands at approximately 2,100 passengers per voyage, reflecting a healthy and positive response.
As per sources, passenger experience remains a key highlight, with embarkation and disembarkation levels this year at 55.4% and 65%, respectively. Enhanced immigration processes, particularly through the integration of e-visa support for officers, are expected to further streamline future operations.
“Cruise tourism is more than just sea travel—it’s about creating experiences and meaningful connections,” said Dr. M. Angamuthu, IAS, Chairperson of Vizag Port Authority, speaking to Vizag Industrial Scan.
Calling Visakhapatnam, the “jewel of the eastern seaboard,” he underlined the city’s growing appeal as a luxury cruise destination and emphasized VPA’s commitment to world-class infrastructure, including e-visa integration and seamless passenger experiences.
“Our vision is to position Vizag as South Asia’s preferred cruise destination—offering authenticity, warmth, and adventure” said Dr Angamuthu.
The chairman further added that every cruise arrival brings new economic opportunities for local businesses, from hospitality to handicrafts.
Though no new cruise liners are confirmed for the upcoming season, Cordelia Cruises has already planned a return voyage in 2026, indicating continued confidence in Vizag as a cruise tourism hub.
