DCIL undertakes Rs 57 cr beach nourishment project

DCIL and VPA’s Chairman, Dr Madhaiyaan Angamuthu, IAS, recently inaugurated the Shore Pumping & Beach Nourishment Dredging work for 2023-24 undertaken by Dredging Corporation of India Limited.

The project funded by Visakhapatnam Port Authority is for dredging and shore pumping of about 6.3 lakh CuM of sand. The total value of the three year dredging contract is said to be Rs 57.26 Cr.

As part of the contract, DCIL is carrying out the said activity for the second year dredging of about 2.1 lakh CuM for a total value of the year Rs 19.09 Cr. 

The dredging would be carried out for about 30 days for each year. Speaking on the occasion Dr Madhaiyaan Angamuthu, IAS, Chairperson, VPA & DCIL said that to control the beach erosion and to keep the beauty of the Visakhapatnam beach specially covering Ramakrishna Beach and submarine Museum, the said activity is being carried out during past few years with VPA funds.

DCIL chairman further said that Visakhapatnam Port Authority has been committed to control the erosion by regularly nourishing the Rama Krishna Beach with the sand available in the sand trap at the outer harbour. 

He further emphasized that to reduce the erosion, Dredging Corporation of India Limited with its state of art dredgers- DCI Dredge 21, would dredge the sand material from inside the port area and pump the sand ashore the R K Beach using self-floating pipeline of length 0.50 KM / rainbowing.
